Stravinskyana, quasi variations on a theme by Stravisnky, for violin solo and wind ensemble, (14')
Premiere: Rachel Stegeman (violin), Duquesne Contemporary Ensemble, David Stock (conductor), Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA, November 11, 2008
Recording: live performance of the premiere
One of the non-American composers who dramatically influenced and even changed the American "classical" music was undoubtedly the Russian Igor Stravinsky. Why Stravinsky but not Prokofiev or Shostakovich, for instance?- let the musicologists (and psychologists) research that topic in depth.
I wrote this piece partially because of my interest in Stravinsky's "cunning" musical imagination, and partially as an experiment in creating something "idiomatically" American (if there is such thing!).
